Chapter 63
Katie loved swimming. In her little pink suit with
ruffles around the hips and down the back of the straps, she looked like a
chubby toy doll. With a warm terry wrap draped around her shoulders at the
moment she looked like a mermaid. Jenn sat in her lounger in the water and
basked in the warm afternoon sunshine and smiled at her daughter. They had
finished Katie's lesson and were now relaxing. Katie sat in a floating toy
trying to paddle around to catch beach balls and other toys. If only life were
always this carefree, Jenn wished.
The afternoon was pleasantly warm, but not hot. As the
shadows lengthened, Jenn felt icy chills run up her legs and down her arms a
few times. A tiny droplet of water set it off once, a huge splash from Katie
triggered it again, and a sudden chill from nowhere made the shivers race.
"Time's up, Katie bug," Jenn said. She
slipped off her lounger and treaded water near Katie.
"Shark! Shark!" Katie squealed.
Jenn dove underwater and came up tickling Katie's
toes. She kicked and shrieked with laughter. It was music to her ears.
"Whale! Whale!" Katie begged.
Jenn dove and came up to grab her ankles. Katie kicked
and giggled.
"Angel fish! Angel fish!"
It was a game of dive and tickle, beg and receive. It
took Jenn at least ten minutes to drag Katie to the side at that rate. She
pulled Katie from the toy and plopped her on the side of the pool, then climbed
out behind her. Chills from nowhere sprang to her skin. Jenn quickly wrapped
them up and headed for the house. She waved her pinkie at Kevin before they
darted inside.
