Chapter 58
"Matt Jensen. Sorry I missed your call. Leave a
message and I'll get back with you." Beep!
"Angela called. Who is she? Why would the
bat-wing eared man be in Chicago? The General Whoever you said he is. She saw
him and called me. He gave her the creeps. Why did she call me? Can you answer
that? My imagination is going crazy. Totally berserk. Is Angela working with
the General? Or is she in danger? If she's working with the General, are they
searching for me and Katie? Call me back after you figure things out. Oh, and
if Angela is in danger, would you mind saving her? We are friends, you know.
But if Angela's a bad guy, I mean a bad lady, lock her away and give me the
key. I'll keep it safe for a million years. One for every goosebump she gave me.
Do you think I deserve a fright like that? No. Anyway, get back to me, Samuel,
my dear, sweet missing husband who is never around when I actually need
him."
Jenn hung up and laughed. She was sure to hear back
soon.
"Kevin here," Kevin curtly said when he
answered Jenn's phone call a moment later.
"There's a generator in the lower basement."
"Huh? What makes you think that? Did you break
in?"
"I have connections."
Kevin laughed. "You're up in the night."
Jenn laughed this time. "That's right. But tell me,
Uncle Kevin, why did I dream about a general last night? I dreamed he had
bat-wing ears like that guy in my sketch. He was chasing me. His eyes gave me
the creeps."
Kevin was silent, something Jenn hadn't expected. He
seemed to recover and ask, "A what was chasing you? A bat?"
"A general. You know, a military type guy, or
just a plain old ordinary type guy who titled himself General for some reason.
Maybe because he was the leader of a bat-brigade." Jenn giggled.
Kevin was silent for a long moment. When he spoke it
was to scold her. "Mrs. Morgan, I take my job seriously. My duty is to
protect my country. I'd appreciate it if you didn't try to entertain me with
silly dreams and speculations about what's behind doors. We're trying to get
your husband home and…"
"Kevin, let's cut through the crap. Who is The General? Why is he in Chicago? Have
you been monitoring my phone calls? If not, why not? Haven't you listened to
the message I just left on Matt's phone yet? Haven't you heard what Angela said
to me less than ten minutes ago? She saw The
General in person again. Are you going to save me, but lose another agent's
wife and two sons?"
"What are you talking about, Jenn—Dia?"
"Pull up my phone log. I suspect you can,
correct?"
"Yes."
"Listen to the last two calls. Listen to them,
and I mean listen. Make sure Angela's call to me can't be traced so I'm not in
more danger, and make sure Angela is safe. Got that?"
"Jenn, what are you talking about? I can't listen
to your phone calls—what you say."
"You're stalling for time, Kevin, because you
want to see and know everything while I'm still talking to you on the phone.
Well, stop it. Go to work and save your country—starting with me and Angela."
Jenn hung up.
She knew she was jumping into something she knew
nothing about when she made her next phone call. "Angela, have you got a
minute to talk?" she asked when Angela finally got on the line.
"I'm in the middle of a shampoo."
"Listen. I'll be brief. Leave work now. Get your
boys. Go to your husband's office. Get some protection. That bat-wing eared man
is on the bad guy list."
Angela started laughing. Jenn heard the phone clatter
to the floor. When Angela returned she said, "Okay, the joke is up. I'm
sorry I involved you. I'm… Jenn are you serious?"
"Yes! Ten times ten—yes!"
"Kent's out of town until Friday."
"Get your boys and go to his office. Tell his
boss. Take the sketch with you. Just do it. Do it now! I don’t care if you
leave shampoo in your client’s hair. Just go!"
"Jenn, the joke's up," Angela's said with a
laugh.
"It's not a joke. Please go. Go now, please?"
Angela's voice came back in a whisper. "Help!
Mrs. Covington just walked in—twenty minutes early. She's a huge tipper and I'm
doing her perm. I've got to get this cut finished so I don't lose the tip.
Gotta go."
The line went dead.
Jenn closed the phone and thumped it on her knee and
let out an exasperated, "Ahhhhh!" She knew she'd just run into
someone as hardheaded as herself. The clouds moved on and the sun returned,
sending warmth and light to ease Jenn's shivers. That helped tremendously.
Katie stirred, opened her big brown eyes and smiled. Jenn leaned over and
kissed her cheek. "Ready for your swimming lesson little Katie water
bug?"
Katie immediately was fully awake.
"It's chilly out there."
Katie didn't seem to care. She was already off like a
speeding bullet to find her swimming suit.
