My 2nd Novel: Hidden Secrets; Chapter 56

Hidden Secrets
Chapter 56

During my break I applied the second coat of paint to the sofa table I've been working on. Yep, I turned my great room into a paint studio. This project should be finished in a day or two and I'll start another one. :)

Chapter 56

Matt hadn't slept well and it showed. He'd fidgeted during the entire flight from Phoenix to Dallas, couldn't sleep all night, and now he was pacing his office with a pounding headache. He'd tried to think of every angle to the situation the office was involved in, but there were too many missing pieces. Too many…
"Hey, you're back," Kevin said, interrupting his stride. "How did it go with the queen?"
Matt finally laughed. "She's hanging in there. She's got a torture chamber in that castle with your name on the door. I suggest you don't drop in for a visit unless you like punishment."
Kevin laughed. "Yeah, I bet she does." He sat down on Matt’s chair and nodded thoughtfully. "We've put her through a little bit, but if she knew the truth, she'd think we were treating her like royalty. What is it with people you try to protect? You set them up in a nice place and they act like they're being abused."
Matt shrugged. "Jenn's pretty independent. She's had to take care of herself ever since her brother got married and moved off and I left for college."
"Was she planning to leave?"
"Almost done packing. Glad you caught the signs. Good save," Matt said.
Kevin shrugged. "It wasn't hard. First year type detective work. She left a trail a mile wide. Checking hotels and weather in Vegas, San Diego and L.A. Couldn't miss it. Will she stay in Phoenix now? "
Matt shook his head. "I'd give her about six or seven more days, then she'll hit the road. There might not be any clues to follow once she leaves. She's loaded."
"Yeah, she's pulled almost five-thousand cash out of the ATM's. Does she think we don't know that?"
Matt sat on the edge of his desk. "She knows. She's as good as you, Kevin. The question is, can we out-guess her once she's on the run? Hopefully before that happens?"
Kevin swore. "We've lost Nick. Not a word. And we have to babysit his wife and daughter? I don't think they pay me enough to do this. I sit around and watch her spend money—steal it, really—and don't have enough time left over to find her husband."
"I know," Mitchell said, sticking his head into the office. He entered and shut the door. "It's time to make some changes, boys." With a flick of his wrist Kevin was out of the chair and Matt was seated in front of the computer pulling up files as commanded.
"Natalie. Let's get her latest info up," Mitchell said, over his shoulder. Matt entered the codes to bring up her file as Mitchell said, "She didn't check in last night.
Matt spun around in his chair and stared at his boss.
"Another rat?"
"No, the same old one. This time he won't slip through our trap."
"Why are you so confident?"
Mitchell laughed. "It's Natalie he's got. She'll escape. She always has."
