My 2nd Novel: Hidden Secrets; Chapter 44

Hidden Secrets
Chapter 44

Hi there! If you're loving, or even liking, my novel, stick with me through the end. Along the way, I hope you're enjoying the ride! I just checked and I've got 32 chapters to go. I keep them short so it won't take you long to read them (if I get them posted quickly enough). If you're sitting in the waiting room getting your brakes worked on, let me know and I'll try to speed it up so you don't have to watch the TV show the other customer is glued to.

Chapter 44

"Jenn! Is that really you?" Angela squealed after she answered the phone.
"No, it's my phantom ghost. The real me was whisked away from the Dallas airport and transported to the Sahara Desert. Yes, it's me! How are you?"
"Freezing to death. I popped on the computer this afternoon and saw that it's a whole sixty-three degrees in Dallas today. How can you stand the heat wave?"
Jenn laughed. "It's tolerable. I've been able to take Katie swimming. It's cut into my free time so I haven't had an extra second to sketch the bat wing-eared man for you yet."
Angela laughed. "That's fine. I have a new face for you. I went to the grocery store today and saw a lady rifling through the tomatoes and…" Jenn listened to the story, every funny detail about the woman who put a tomato in her purse. "So what should I have done, taken her hostage?" Angela finished.
"Definitely."
"I didn't," Angela moaned.
"Next time whip off your nylons and put them to good use. Call Bob and tell him how handy they are. Hold her until the authorities arrive, threatening to use your spiky heels if she tries to escape."
Angela laughed. "I should have called you while I watched her. I could have used your moral support. Next time I will."
"I have a new phone with a new number. It's one of those fancy little perks that arrived the day I got home." Jenn rattled off her new number and waited for Angela to enter it into her phone. They chatted for another ten minutes or so before Angela asked if she'd had the opportunity to use any of her training.
Jenn was sitting cross-legged on the sofa in her nighties while Katie played at her feet with a new toy. For a moment she wondered what she could tell. Finally she said, "Angela, my phone is secure. Is yours?"
"Yes. It's one of those privileges I have through my husband's work."
"Wow, what perks we get," Jenn exaggerated.
"Why?" Angela asked in a serious tone.
Jenn shrugged and got up and crossed the room and flipped on the gas fireplace and sat down in front of it. She rubbed the chills on her arms and finally said, "My calls are monitored."
The phone was silent. Finally Angela responded. "You love to joke, but for some reason, I don't think you are now."
"Nope. And that little confession is on the record now for my uncle to hear."
The phone was silent again. Angela finally said, "So, do I dare talk to you? I mean…" Angela started laughing. "I can't believe I fell for that! I got goose bumps! You are so good! Way good, girl! Your voice—so serious and perfect! Theatrics at its best!"
Jenn giggled. "I can't believe you believed me! From now on I'll be nice. How are work, your family and your kids?"
Jenn hung up an hour later promising to sketch the tomato thief and the airport security man and send them as soon as possible.
