This was my backyard a couple of weeks ago. Since then every tree has dumped their leaves on my lawn and through my gardens. They've been raked up and hauled to the green waste dump. You're lucky because that means I can spend time posting my novel!
Secrets at Midnight

Chapter 53
Inside the cart Jenn
found a hand hold as she situated herself on a soft blanket. With the other
hand she pushed Katie’s cheek against her shoulder and whispered, “Shh. Close
your eyes.” She shut her own, perking her ears and hearing Matt’s farewell, but
not daring to reply. Two sets of footsteps retreated.
The elevator descended
again, the door opened and the cart moved. The cleaning woman—or whoever that
woman was—pushed her and whistled. Half her notes masked by rolling cart wheels
and the remaining ones sounded like the theme song from a horror flick. The
cart stopped and the woman helped her out saying, “Take care, honey.” Her smile
contradicted the scenes Jenn's imagination had conjured up during her short
ride.
If secrecy were
important, the sports car Jenn found waiting for her screamed notice me! She
climbed in saying, “This isn’t safe. My daughter needs a car seat. If you’re
pulled over we'll never get to the deli on time.”
The driver waved at
the blanket Jenn had been sitting on in the cart that Katie had dragged along
with them. “Cover the kid with that,” he growled.
Jenn buckled up and
shook out folds from the blanket only to discover it was a towel. As if on cue,
the gun in her pocket gouged her hip. The driver wove through traffic, glancing
in his mirrors and acting like a thief expecting apprehension. She focused on
the clock—watching minutes countdown.
“Angels Deli,” the
driver announced, jerking his head toward the curb. “It's closed.”
Jenn glanced at her
watch. “We’re early. I'll wait.” Her hand reached for the door handle as the
man’s foot hit the gas pedal. She saw customer’s occupying tables inside the
deli before she was thrown back in the seat. “They’re not closed,” she
gasped.
They are to us—we’ve got company.” The driver pushed
her head down. “Careful, now. Don’t become a target.”
The car rocketed
around a turn. Jenn hugged Katie and peeked through the window. “How long until
we reach the pavilion?”
The driver laughed.
“There’s no pavilion—just us, honey.”
Jenn angled her hand to
grasp her gun, but speeding in and out of traffic didn’t seem like a good time
to kill a driver. She began pleading for their lives, keeping her loaded threat
hidden.
