I'm excited for winter. The calendar says it won't officially start until next month, but I suspect a little snow will fall in my happy little village tonight. When it's stormy there's nothing better than curling up with a good book and joining someone's adventure. I hope you're enjoying this one.

Chapter 52
Waiting for the
elevator, Matt studied Jenn’s reflection in the silver trim surrounding the
door. Her grip on Katie had turned her knuckles pasty. “You okay?” he asked.
“Best day of my life,”
she muttered.
“Could be,” he
cheerfully said, challenging her pessimism.
She faced him. “You
used to be fun—had a sense of humor and caused everyone to pee their pants
during laughing fits.” She tapped his temple with a clenched fist. “Knock,
knock. Anyone I know in there?”
He grinned—contradicting
his gut feelings. “Next time you see me I’ll make you laugh—if you’ll promise
you won’t pee.”
She faked a smile.
“Deal, but I wish we weren’t separating.”
“That's the first vote
of confidence you've given me since we left Dallas. Scared I might die?” He
gave her a quick hug. “I’ll be okay, kid. You too.”
Jenn pulled away. “I
hope you’re not lying.” Her lips clamped shut, her teeth pestering the bottom
one.
The moment the elevator
doors slid shut behind them he took Katie from her arms and helped her remove
the jacket. Like clockwork the elevator stopped and picked up a cleaning crew
and switches were completed before they reached the main level. “Love ya,” Matt
whispered as the doors slid open, revealing the lobby. “I’ll see you soon,
kid.”
